YÖS exam and SAT exam in Turkey for foreigners – University admission exams in Turkey for foreigners

Turkish universities are attracting international students, especially Arab each year because universities in Turkey offer a high-quality education competing with universities all around the globe. Moreover, Turkish universities don’t put difficult admission requirements for foreigners. The university admission exams in Turkey are the YOS exam and the SAT exam as we will see in this article from Ebla Real Estate.

YÖS exam for foreign students in Turkey:

“YÖS” is an abbreviation of “Yabancı Öğrenci Sınavı,” which means in English “Exam for Foreign Students.” This test is for (non-Turkish) international students wishing to enroll in Turkish public universities. Therefore, YÖS is a “local” exam not recognized in international universities like TOEFL and IELTS.

Public universities give priority to the obtained YÖS score. This score will determine which faculty the student can join. Turkish public universities require a minimum average for admission to each faculty. If the international student obtains the required score, he can enroll and start his study immediately.

YÖS exam questions:

The subjects of YÖS test questions from the three topics of Mathematics, Engineering and Intelligence. These questions may total up to 80 or 100 questions. Moreover, it is made up of three parts, which are as follows:

  1. Intelligence Questions: The number of IQ questions is about half the questions (from 45 to 55 questions). The IQ test questions can be answered easily by repetition and practice by anyone with normal intelligence.
  2. Math Questions: This part includes only about 30 questions. However, if the total number of questions is 100, the questions in this section will be 45 questions. The questions in this section include basic mathematics topics, including functions, trigonometry, logarithms, derivatives and integrals.
  3. Geometry Questions: The minimum number of questions related to this section ranges between 5 and 10. Topics include basic principles of geometry, that is, angles, circles, triangles and the similarities between them, spatial geometry and so on.
Register for the YÖS exam:

To register for the YÖS exam, you should log in to the relevant university website, read the test booklet, locate the test, complete the information requested on the site, pay the test fee, and attend the test on the specified date and time.

Every university conducts its own YÖS exam and each one announces the dates and venue of the YÖS exam on its official website. In general, universities in Turkey hold these exams from approximately mid-April to early June every year, over a period of two months.  It is worth noting that students must take the test at the same university in which they intend to pursue their studies.

SAT exam for foreign students in Turkey:

“SAT” is the abbreviation of “Scholastic Assessment Test,” which means in English “School Assessment Test.” This test measures students’ aptitude for admission to universities and higher education institutions. Furthermore, it helps students get admission to Turkish public universities or USA universities. Additionally, this exam tests students’ skills in English and it is recognized in many prestigious international and Turkish universities.

Sections of SAT exam:

This test contains four main sections, which are:

  1. Writing Section: This section evaluates the student’s English writing skills and knowledge of the various vocabularies and terms. The test consists of 44 questions, and the duration of the test is 35 minutes.
  2. Reading Section: This section contains literary texts. The evaluation depends on the student’s reading and comprehension of the given text to answer the text-related questions correctly. Reading section consists of 52 questions and takes 65 minutes.
  3. Mathematics and Arithmetic Problems Section: This section presents several arithmetic problems in geometry, algebra, statistics /graphs, trigonometry, and data analysis.
  4. Essay Section: This section contains one optional question to write a determined literary essay on a specific topic by the test administration in 50 minutes.

Register for the SAT exam:

Students in Turkey register for the test online. The student should visit the official website of the College Board during the specified date to fill out the application form with all required information, choose the nearest center, and pay the test fees.

It is worth noting that the dates and venues for the test are announced each year on the official website of the College Board.
