Can foreigners buy a car in Turkey?
Of course, foreigners can buy a car in Turkey, and they can register it and obtain a driver’s license. However, there is a condition to buy a car in Turkey for foreigners as a foreigner has to have one of the following documents:
- Short-term residence in Turkey, such as real estate or tourist residence.
- A work permit in Turkey, which replaces the tourist residence permit and other types of residence permits.
- Temporary protection card
How to register a car in Turkey for a foreigner?
Foreigners can buy a car in Turkey and register it; all they need are the following documents:
A passport, a copy of the passport, translated and certified, residence permit and a copy of it.
It is worth noting that the auto showroom can register your car in Turkey in your name in the Traffic Department within the city in which you reside. However, it will add the registration expenses to the price of the car.
Register a car purchased from Turkey:
To register a car purchased from Turkey, you must submit the following documents to the Traffic Registration Office at the Traffic Department in your state:
- Residence permit, temporary protection card or work permit.
- Car insurance policy.
- Tüvtürk Vehicle Inspection Report.
- Vehicle registration document.

Register an imported vehicle in Turkey:
To register an imported vehicle in Turkey, you must submit the previous documents in addition to the following documents:
The temporary entry document for the car. As stipulated in Article (49\A) of the law: If you have brought a car from outside Turkey, this document must be extracted from the Customs Administration. The validity period of this document is only 15 days, and during this period, the vehicle registration transaction must be completed in your name in the Traffic Department.
The registration document issued by the country from which the vehicle was brought in, translated and certified.

Registration of all cars in Turkey is the responsibility of the Traffic Registration Office (Trafik Tescil Genel Mudurlugu). These offices are managed by the Security and Police Dept (Emniyet Mudurlugu). Nearly all cities and towns have more than one registration office.
An imported vehicle must have ‘MA/MZ’ registration plates which marks it as belonging to a foreigner who resides within Turkey. In addition, the vehicle is only allowed to be driven by the owner or his first-degree relatives, wife or son.
Fees and taxes for buying a car in Turkey for foreigners:
- Vehicle registration fees in Turkey, which are paid once upon registration.
- Vehicle inspection fees, which are paid every two years.
- The car engine tax, which is paid once a year, and its value varies according to the specifications of the car.
- Car insurance tax, which is paid once a year.

Buying a car in Turkey for Syrians:
Syrians, who have obtained a temporary protection card, can buy a car in Turkey simply like any Turkish citizen. Syrians can also register the car in their name directly, once they have the necessary documents.
