The Port of Haydarpaşa is located in Istanbul, the biggest and the most populous city in Turkey. Being a deep water seaport, the port of Istanbul plays a significant role in the region.

The Port of Istanbul is also called the Port of Haydarpaşa or Port of Haidar Pasha (code TRHAY).

Haydarpaşa Port is one of the three major Turkey’s shipping ports, along with the Port of Ambarlı, and the Port of Zeytinburnu.

Haydarpaşa’s annual cargo volume exceeds 60 million tons.

 

History of Haydarpaşa Port in Istanbul:

Anatolian Baghdad Railways Company started to build Haydarpaşa Port on the 20 of April 1899. The company operated the port until 1924.

On the 24 of May 1924, Haydarpaşa Port was purchased by the government. Three years later, it was transferred to the Railways Administration under the Ministry of Public Works.

On February 5, 1953, an extension for the Port of Haydarpaşa was started. The port was gradually transferred to TCDD Enterprise in 1954. Furthermore, its operation began in 1967. From 1979, they also added a ferry pier, CFS 1 warehouse, a breakwater and more to the port.

 

Facilities of Haydarpaşa Port in Istanbul:

It contains two large piers with 21 berths. It handles dry bulk, general cargo, roll-on/roll-off cargo, as well as servicing motorboats and containerized cargo.

Furthermore, Haydarpaşa Port has lifts of over 100 tons’ capacity, one floating crane of 250 tons’ capacity, and seventeen mobile cranes of 5 to 25 tons’ capacity.

Two breakwaters protect vessels in the port, whose total area is 343,420 square meters.

Moreover, the space for a container terminal is nearly 100,000 m² with a holding capacity of 15,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU). The annual handling capacity of the Port is 750,000 TEU.

A container freight station of 3,600 m² is available behind the container quay. In addition to the open storage area of ​​313,000 m² and covered area of ​​21,000 m².

Additionally, there exists a container land terminal outside the port in Göztepe for stacking the empty containers. It covers an area of ​​55,000 m² with a holding capacity of 52,800 TEUTEU.

The holding capacity of the container terminal is 6,000 TEU. Yearly, the terminal can hold 655,000 TEU.
