New Year’s Day (Yılbaşı) 1 January:
It is the first day of the Gregorian year, and the first day of the calendar. New Year’s Day is on 1 January. In addition, it ois a public holiday in Turkey and throughout the world.
National Sovereignty and Children’s Day (Ulusal Egemenlik) 23 April:
It is on 23 April. This celebration is to commemorate the first gathering of the Grand National Assembly (the Turkish Parliament). Moreover, Atatürk dedicated the Turkish Republic to the children. The Turkish government then combined the two events into National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in 1935.
Labor and Solidarity Day (Emek ve dayanişma günü) 1 May:
It is on 1 May. Labor and Solidarity Day is an official holiday and this day expresses solidarity and appreciation for workers around the world. It is celebrated by many countries of the world, including Turkey.
Youth and Sports Day 19 May:
It is on 19 May. This celebration is to commemorate the arrival of Atatürk in Samsun in 1919 and the beginning of the War of Independence which resulted in a victory for Turkey and the foundation of the Turkish Republic. Moreover, Ataturk himself proclaimed May 19th as “Youth & Sports Day” to recognize the importance of the youth of Turkey, and celebrate their achievements.
Celebrating foiled coup attempt, Democracy and National Unity Day (Demokrasi ve milli birlik günü) 15 July:
The day is commemorated with events honoring those who lost their lives while defeating the failed coup of 2016.
Victory Day in Turkey (Zafer bayramı) 30 August:
It is on 30 August. It is dedicated to the armed forces. Victory Day is to commemorate Atatürk and celebrate the victory over the Greeks at one of the final most decisive battles in Dumlupınar in 1922 which led to the end of the Turkish War of Independence.
Republic Day (Cumhuriyet bayramı) 29 October:
It is the most important national holiday in Turkey. It celebrates the anniversary of the proclamation of the Turkish Republic in 1923 AD. Commemorative events for Republic Day usually start at 1:00 pm on October 28 and end at the end of October 29. On this day, the Turkish people commemorate the events of October 29, 1923 AD, when Mustafa Kemal Ataturk announced that Turkey had become a republic.
Eid al-Fitr (Şeker bayramı) 1 Shawwal of the Islamic year:
Muslims celebrate the religious holiday worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan. It falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar. Eid al-Fitr is celebrated for three days.
Eid al-Adha (Kurban bayramı) 10 Dhul-Hijjah of the Islamic year:
It is the second and the bigger of the two main holidays celebrated in Islam. Moreover, it is an official holiday in Turkey and all Islamic countries. The holiday begins on the 10th day of the Muslim calendar lunar month of Dhul-Hijja. Muslims sacrifice a lamb, goat, cow, camel or other animal that is then divided into threes to be shared equally among family, friends and the needy.
