The most famous mosque in Bursa is one of the most beautiful tiled buildings in Turkey. Moreover, it is included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Bursa.

The Green Mosque, also known as the Mosque of Mehmed I, is a part of a larger complex on the east side of Bursa, Turkey, the former capital of the Ottoman Turks. The complex consists of a mosque, türbe, madrasah, kitchen and bath.

The Green Mosque is located in Yesil district, namely in the Yildirim district of Bursa. It is 1.3 km (17min) walking distance to the old Ottoman centers.. Such as Bursa Grand Mosque and Koza Han in Osmangazi district of Bursa.

Bursa Green Mosque was built by prominent architect Hacı Ivaz Pasha at the request of Ottoman Sultan Celebi Mehmet between 1415 and 1419 years in Bursa, Turkey to be a mosque and a government mansion at the same time.

The Green Mosque is based on an inverted T-plan. And it is a two-story, cube-shaped building with an extension on the south side. The marble mosque is one of the first marble structures built in Bursa. The marbles brought from Marmara Island were carefully decorated and an eye-catching architectural work emerged. It is worth noting that the masterpiece of the mosque is the tile-adorned mihrab painting portraying geometric patterns.

 

History of the most famous mosque in Bursa:

The Green Mosque is often seen as the culmination of the early Ottoman architectural style.. Mainly due to the level of aesthetic and technical mastery displayed within the mosque.

The Green Mosque was commissioned in 1412 by Sultan Mehmed I Çelebi, who ruled from 1413 to 1421, after a fight against his brothers to reunite the Ottoman Empire. Decorative work continued on the mosque after Mehmed I’s death by his son II Murad who also built the Green Tomb across the mosque as a Royal Tomb to his father and his family members.

The construction of the Green Mosque was supervised by architect and patron of the arts vizier Hacı İvaz Pasha, who had been a commander under Mehmed I. The impressive pen work in the domes and tiles embellishing the walls were made by Nakkas Ali who was the most famous artist of Turkish Islamic Architecture in the 15th Century.

The Green Mosque was damaged during an earthquake in 1855. And it was restored by French architect Léon Parvillée (1830-1885) beginning in 1863. He rebuilt the two minarets and restored the interior, exterior, and tiles. Further restorations took place between 1941 and 1943, and again between 2010 and 2012.
